In 1881 Ferguson was elected President of the Royal Irish Academy, and was made a Brehon Law Commissioner in 1884. In that year he received the degree of LL.D. from the University of Edinburgh, honoris causa, having previously â in 1865 â received the honorary degree of LL.D. from Trinity College, Dublin.
